The possible transfer of Matthijs de Ligt to FC Bayern is currently moving football in Germany. The 22-year-old central defender from Juventus Turin is said to be about to move to Munich. But would the Dutchman help the German record champions at all? What the experts say:
It’s still just a rumor, but there are currently many indications that Matthijs de Ligt could actually switch to FC Bayern in the Bundesliga. According to “Bild” information, the club bosses and coach Julian Nagelsmann have realized that a new strong man for the defense center is needed.
According to TV expert Lothar Matthäus, de Ligt would be just the right thing for FC Bayern. “He’s a van Dijk type, can take on the role of defense chief at Bayern, who is missing there,” Matthäus explained on “Bild” and compared de Ligt to his compatriot, who moved to Liverpool in 2018 and became the leader there.
De Ligt was “one of the best central defenders in Europe, at 22 such a young player that Bayern would have taken care of this position for the next few years,” said the DFB record player enthusiastically. The defender is “a super transfer if it works – a huge reinforcement”.
Coach legend Huub Stevens took the same line. “Just as I saw de Ligt play at Ajax Amsterdam back then, he learned a lot defensively at Juventus Turin!” The multiple Schalke coach praised the development of the 22-year-old, who switched from Ajax to Juve in the summer of 2019.
Stevens: “De Ligt suits FC Bayern”
“He suits the Munich style, he has to defend up front. He was already great at Ajax Amsterdam. He’s a defender who plays along,” continued Stevens, who also warned: “The fee is of course crazy”.
The Dutchman could cost up to 100 million euros, according to Italian media, Turin’s demand should be as high. “But you can see in England that it’s normal for defenders to pay that amount,” said Stevens.
Former Hertha defense chief Dick van Burik would also recommend a transfer to Munich. “I’ve known Matthijs since he was a midfielder when he was young at Ajax. He has that drive and will that makes him an incredible player. He would be a huge thing for the Bundesliga.”
The 22-year-old has “as much experience as a 28-year-old,” van Burik continued. “I think he would suit Bayern very well.”
