Bundesliga club FC Bayern Munich has signed Dutch international Daley Blind. The 32-year-old was last under contract with Ajax Amsterdam and will travel with the team to the training camp in Doha.

FC Bayern confirmed its first winter signing on Thursday evening, January 5th. Dutch international Daley Blind is moving to the Bundesliga leaders with immediate effect and has signed a contract in Munich until the end of the season. “We are delighted to have Daley join our team. Daley is a flexible defender, he can play on the left as well as inside. He has great international experience and leadership qualities. I’m sure he will help us,” said sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.

Blind as Hernandez’s replacement during his rehab

The defender is also a substitute for the injured Lucas Hernandez to FC Bayern. The Munich team will have to do without the French in the second half of the season. The 26-year-old, who can play both as a left-back and as a central defender, tore his cruciate ligament at the World Cup in Qatar. Blind has played mainly at left-back throughout his career, but has experience as a central defender and defensive midfielder as well.

Blind will travel with the team to the training camp in Qatar next Friday. “I can’t wait to play here. We’re now facing the most important part of the season, which is about the titles – and a club like FC Bayern can win any trophy. The hunger for titles here at the club was crucial for my decision. I hope I can use my experience to help the team and I will give everything for Bayern Munich,” Blind was quoted as saying on the club’s website.

Contract termination at Ajax after irritation

Blind’s contract with Ajax Amsterdam was terminated shortly after Christmas. Both sides had agreed on it, the defensive player said goodbye to his youth club with critical words. “That’s not how I imagined my end at Ajax, but due to circumstances it happened that way,” he wrote on Twitter at the time. According to the media, one reason for the separation was a breach of trust with coach Alfred Schreuder.

Active in Amsterdam and for the national team

Blind had played 333 competitive games for Ajax. He won the Eredivisie championship seven times and the national cup twice. At the World Cup in Qatar, the 99-time national player played for Oranje in all five games until the quarter-finals. At Ajax, the defender followed in the footsteps of his father, Danny Blind, who was the chief of defense in Amsterdam until 1996.
