Even after leaving Munich, Jérôme Boateng never lost sight of FC Bayern. The former national player was surprised that the German record champions had to let Niklas Süle move to BVB this summer.
For years, Jérôme Boateng and Niklas Süle were important pillars of FC Bayern’s central defence. Sometimes the two defenders were position competitors, sometimes partners in defence.
The paths have now parted. While Boateng has been playing for the French first division club Olympique Lyon with moderate success since 2021, Süle only recently joined Borussia Dortmund – on a free transfer.
Boateng is still surprised that the change took place at all. “I think it’s a shame that it had to come to this because Niki has huge potential,” emphasized the 33-year-old in an interview with “table football“.
Years at FC Bayern “the most beautiful in my football life”
Boateng has been earning his living in Lyon for a year and his contract is still valid for the coming season. In Germany he had played for Hertha BSC, Hamburger SV and most recently for FC Bayern.
Before his time at Säbener Straße, he was active in England with Manchester City. Boateng described the years in Munich as “the most beautiful in my football life”.
This is one of the reasons why the 2014 world champion can imagine a return to the Bundesliga. “The topic is not closed. I can imagine a lot in Europe. That includes Germany because it’s a great league with great teams and great fans. The Bundesliga is not a no-go,” said the native of Berlin.
Special praise for “leader type” de Ligt
At Bayern, however, there should be no more room for the veteran. The German industry leader has just strengthened its back line with Dutchman Matthijs de Ligt.
“A very good guy, down to earth. His qualities speak for themselves. A type of leader who will hopefully continue to improve at FCB and thus continue on his way to becoming a world-class defender,” Boateng praised the Oranje ace out.
