Thomas Müller is set both under Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern and under Hansi Flick in the national team. However, ex-professional Mario Basler is critical of the status of the offensive star – and demands a bank place for the Munich veteran.
“I think that Müller’s form at the World Cup, in big games, is not what it used to be. You’ve seen that at Bayern in the last few weeks,” said Basler “Sport1”. The 53-year-old lashed out at the long-time Bayern player: “A Thomas Müller who is completely out of shape – out with him!”
Müller has played in all eleven competitive games for FC Bayern this season. One goal and three assists have been recorded so far. Müller was also mostly seeded in the international matches under Hansi Flick.
With a view to the upcoming World Cup in winter, however, Basler would let Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané and Kai Havertz play on the offensive side of the DFB team. Midfielder Ilkay Gündogan is also “a class better than Thomas Müller in terms of football,” said Basler.
BVB star Mats Hummels for the World Cup? Clear words from Mario Basler
Basler also found hard words about Mats Hummels. Despite improving form, the BVB star did not make it into the DFB squad for the upcoming Nations League games.
“Who’s still thinking about that?” the 1995 top scorer made it clear that he didn’t think the central defender would play a role in the World Cup either.
Instead, Basler rates the chances of Hummels’ teammate Niklas Süle highly. “For me, once Süle understands that fitness at the highest level is important, that he has to be seeded, he can be an outstanding defender,” said the ex-professional.
According to Basler, Mario Götze from Eintracht Frankfurt, like Hummels, is not a candidate for the World Cup squad. “We have very good players, the squad is extremely good. We don’t need Mario Götze at the moment. He should be given more time to settle in,” he demanded.
