Bayer Leverkusen’s women lived up to their role as favorites in epee fencing. There was a big surprise in the saber competition.
The first championship title in fencing was awarded on Saturday (06/25/2022) early in the morning: As expected, the women of Bayer Leverkusen defeated the Heidenheimer SB in the Berlin cupola hall. The four women from the Rhineland were 30:15 ahead with the sword and won their fourth German championship title in a row.
Künzelsau dethrones Dormagen’s women in the saber
In the women’s saber final that followed, Bayer Dormagen and FC Würth Künzelsau faced each other. The role of favorites was also clear here, because the Dormagen women had won every German championship title for their club since 2008.
The four young Dormagers went into the final with corresponding self-confidence, although it was surprisingly close. The women from Künzelsau took the lead after the fourth battle with 20:19 and put the favorites under a lot of pressure. That had an effect – after the fifth round it was already 25:20. And Larissa Eifler – Dormagen’s best fencer – was not able to reduce the gap significantly. After their battle it was 30:23 for Künzelsau. The last fight went over 40:29 – and Julika Funke converted to a 45:33 victory. Series winner Dormagen was dethroned.
Tauberbischofsheim wins foil competition – for the 43rd time
The traditional FC Tauberbischofsheim with final fencer Leandra Behr won the title in the women’s foil competition late in the morning, as expected. PSV Stuttgart fought back bravely in the final battle, but didn’t stand a chance at 32:45. Impressive: It was the 43rd German championship title of the women’s foil from Tauberbischofshiem.
