Sought-after Bayer talent
Offensive star Florian Wirtz does not make his future at Bayer 04 Leverkusen dependent on coach Xabi Alonso staying on. “Of course I would like him to stay for a long time. But in the end everyone has to go their own way and at some point I have to decide independently where I would like to play,” the 20-year-old told the “Editorial network Germany“.
Wirtz has a contract with the “Werkself” until mid-2027. Thanks to his strong performances, with which he made a significant contribution to Bayer’s soaring fortunes this season, there is always speculation about an early move for the midfielder. In addition to FC Bayern Munich, other top European clubs such as Real Madrid and, most recently, Liverpool FC are also mentioned as possible interested parties.

The “Royals” are also said to have successful coach Alonso in their sights and want to sign him as Carlo Ancelotti’s successor in 2024. Wirtz doesn’t want to be deterred by all these rumors. “I’m not that far along yet and I’m currently not really thinking about my future. The fact is: I’m pretty happy at the club right now,” he said.
Alonso is a central figure for him. “I feel extremely valued under him, I feel the trust – that’s really important, especially as a young player. He gives me a lot of freedom on the pitch and always has tips on what I can do better,” said Wirtz about the Spanish head coach, under whom he has scored ten goals and 18 assists in 42 games so far. “He played at the highest level as a professional. It’s nice to have such a legend as a coach. Xabi knows exactly what makes a team tick.”
