League leaders Bayer Leverkusen
Despite the impressive start to the season and first place with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz is cautious. The 20-year-old offensive player is currently not thinking about a possible championship with the “Werkself”. “It wouldn’t be appropriate to talk about it now. “We shouldn’t look too far ahead,” said Wirtz in an interview with “Picture on Sunday“.
“We just want to achieve as much as possible. Last season we were relatively close to a title. We’re trying to do that even better this season,” said the national player, who played in the DFB team’s 3-1 win against the USA. Bayer Leverkusen had the best start to the Bundesliga season in the club’s history under coach Xabi Alonso. The best record so far came from the 2013/14 season, when 18 points were scored in the first seven games under Sami Hyypiä. Currently there is even one more meter on the books.
Wirtz pointed out that only a few games had been played. “We know from Dortmund’s last season that it’s a long road to becoming champions. We just enjoy winning games at the moment. After the international break, we want to pick up where we left off.” Wirtz contributed three goals and four assists in ten competitive games in 2023/24.
Long-term contract at Bayer Leverkusen: Florian Wirtz talks about the future
The former 1. FC Köln homegrown player extended his contract early to 2027 in June 2022. Wirtz is apparently not currently thinking about leaving, for example, for FC Bayern, which has been traded on and off. “We’ve had a very good season with Leverkusen so far, it’s fun at the club. That’s why my thoughts are only in Leverkusen. I still have a pretty long contract. That’s why I don’t need to worry about my future at the moment,” explained the youngster.
