Bayer Leverkusen signs Boniface replacement from Spain

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen have signed Spanish center forward Borja Iglesias – responding to the loss of Victor Boniface.

As the factory club announced on Saturday, the 31-year-old is coming from Betis Sevilla on loan until the end of the season.

“With his footballing profile, Borja Iglesias can fill the gap left by Victor’s loss,” said Bayer Sport managing director Simon Rolfes: “He is physically strong, holds a lot of balls, is confident in combinations, is not afraid of a duel and has a good one Finishing the goal. With him we have the necessary attacking option to continue our successful path.”

Iglesias was considered coach Xabi Alonso’s dream player. “He will start training tomorrow,” said Alonso after the 0-0 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

His Spanish compatriot should “have an immediate impact and get used to the team as quickly as possible.” Iglesias is “a typical striker, intelligent, good in the penalty area,” said Alonso.

Iglesias, who has a contract with Sevilla until 2026, is considered a typical wall and target player with his height of 1.87 meters.

The two-time Spanish international has scored 36 goals for Betis in the last three La Liga seasons, but in the current season he has not progressed beyond the role of a substitute and is still waiting for his first goal of the season.
