Valladolid waives purchase option
“A German club is very interested in Gonzalo Plata for next season. Could his friendship with Piero bring him closer to the Bundesliga?” tweeted journalist María José Flores from the Ecuadorian broadcaster TC Televisión late Wednesday evening. Minutes later, Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s Spanish-language account fueled the rumors with a holiday photo of Piero Hincapié and Plata, both trained at Independiente del Valle’s talent factory. And indeed: The “Werkself” should be interested in Plata.

The Portuguese daily newspaper “records‘ reported that Plata’s agent was contacted again by Bayer 04. The Ecuadorian international had already been linked to the Leverkusen team two years ago. Since then, however, the attacker’s situation at Sporting Lisbon has changed.
After a difficult year at the Portuguese giants, Plata joined Real Valladolid on loan last summer, where the winger thrived again. With 11 goals in 30 games, Plata was an important factor in direct resurgence in LaLiga. He also qualified for the World Cup alongside Hincapié with Ecuador. Plata only made negative headlines off the pitch when he caused a serious traffic accident – but he was completely understanding and also accepted the club’s disciplinary measures.
Bayer Leverkusen with interest: Sporting insists on a transfer fee for Plata
Despite the successful season, Real Valladolid will not exercise the agreed purchase option of 10 million euros because it cannot be lifted. The Spaniards are said to be ready to bid €7m. Sporting are said to be open to selling Plata, but insist on the €10m deal. Bayer 04 are said to have experienced that too. The Lisbon natives have to cede 50 percent of the transfer fee to the Independiente training club, which had secured a corresponding stake in the 2019 change. With Leeds United, another club is said to be eyeing Plata, which could financially meet the demand if Raphinha (25), who is being courted by FC Barcelona, leaves the Whites.

Bayer Leverkusen are likely to look for another alternative on the wings with a view to the imminent departure of left winger Paulinho (21), who is tied until 2023 but reportedly does not want to extend his contract and is himself a candidate at Sporting. In addition, there is always speculation about Moussa Diaby’s (22) desire to move to the Premier League. On the right, the injured Amine Adli (22) is not expected to return until the pre-season. Plus point with Plata: He can play on both wings – and already has it. With Mykhaylo Mudryk (21) from Shakhtar Donetsk, another winger was traded with the “Werkself” recently, but his transfer has been dragging on so far.
