Grimaldo has scored seven goals and 15 assists in 52 games so far this season, making him Benfica’s best assist provider alongside right winger David Neres (26). Coach Roger Schmidt and President Rui Costa have been trying in vain for months to extend the regular player’s contract, whose contract expires in the summer. Recently, Grimaldo had also been associated with numerous clubs in Spain and England.
Grimaldo is seen as a clear upgrade at Bayer Leverkusen
With his offensive drive, Grimaldo fits perfectly into the system of Bayer coach Xabi Alonso, who acts in defense with a three-man chain and high wing. Alonso currently has two regular left-backs in his squad: Mitchel Bakker (22) and Daley Sinkgraven (27). In the case of the latter, the contract ends at the end of the season. Grimaldo is considered a clear upgrade to Bakker, who is also still being traded as a candidate for sale.
