Goal setting coach
Bayer Leverkusen’s head coach Gerardo Seoane hopes that the ongoing sporting development of the “Werkself” will convince top talents like Florian Wirtz (18) to stay longer. “Leverkusen is well on the way to closing the gap to Bayern and BVB. We know that both of us are still ahead of us and that these clubs can be a big challenge for every player,” said the 43-year-old in an interview with the “Picture on Sunday” before the Bundesliga game against 1. FC Köln.
Wirtz most valuable
The Bayer 04 squad in detailIt’s this way!
With Wirtz, Moussa Diaby (22), Edmond Tapsoba (23), Odilon Kossounou (21), Jeremie Frimpong (21) and Exequiel Palacios (23), Bayer has numerous U23 players with a minimum market value of 15 million euros with top performers à la top scorer Patrik Schick (26; 40 million euros) ensure that the Bundesliga club has a good chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Seoane sees “that we are in a positive development phase. We want to constantly improve the team – the players feel that. In addition, we try to maintain a style of play that suits these guys. It’s our job to give players like Wirtz, Diaby or Schick the feeling: I’m in the right place here.”
With Bailey, Havertz & Co.: Bayer Leverkusen’s most expensive sales
For the coach himself, working with those same players was an argument for accepting the challenge in the Bundesliga. “One important reason for my move from Bern to Leverkusen was that there are many talented players with development potential at Bayer 04,” explained Seoane and praised Wirtz, who “maybe had the steepest rise in the last six or seven months. He always amazes us with incredible performances.” Wirtz has scored ten goals and 14 assists in 30 games across all competitions this season. His contract with Bayer ends in 2026 .
Tah sees it like Seoane: Bayer Leverkusen have to keep players like Wirtz
Most recently, central defender Jonathan Tah (26) said in a “kicker” interview about Leverkusen’s claim: “If you have these ambitions as a club, you have to see to it that players like that are kept. You have to give them the feeling that they are not stagnating here, but are developing decisively. Because of course it’s like this: If you lose two or three key players, you have to start again.”
