Winter transfer official
The farewell to Panagiotis Retsos had already begun, and Bayer Leverkusen reported completion on Tuesday evening. The 23-year-old centre-back joins Italian top flight club Hellas Verona, with whom the five-time Greece international has signed a contract until 2023. Despite the working paper, which is valid until June 30, 2022, according to the “Kicker” and the “Bild” newspaper, no fee will be paid – however, Leverkusen will share in the income from a possible resale.
“Panos has always distinguished himself as a great team player, unfortunately he was occasionally thrown back by injuries, especially in his early years with us. We wish him every success for his move to Italy,” said Simon Rolfes, sporting director of the “Werkself”.
Retsos came to Leverkusen from Olympiacos Piraeus for 17.5 million euros in 2017, who in their club history only spent more money on three defense specialists. However, he was never able to assert himself – and was not able to convince other clubs either. Neither Sheffield United, who loaned him out for six months in 2020, nor AS St. Etienne, where he was on loan until last summer, pulled their purchase options. He played a total of 43 games for Bayer 04.

At Verona, Retsos should close the gap in the central defender position, which was caused by the departures of Giangiacomo Magnanis (loan to Sampdoria) and Mert Cetin (loan to Kayserispor) and the long-term absence of Pawel Dawidowicz (torn cruciate ligament).
