Bayer 04 Leverkusen landed a liberating blow on matchday 13 in the Bundesliga and defeated Union Berlin 5-0 (0-0). After a weak first half, the Leverkusen made everything clear shortly after the restart in twelve minutes.
Robert Andrich gave Leverkusen the lead in the 46th minute. Moussa Diaby scored twice within two minutes (56th, 58th) and made the preliminary decision. Adam Hlozek made it 4-0 after 68 minutes, Mitchell Bakker made it 4-0 after 76 minutes. Bayer 04 celebrated their third win of the season and have left the relegation zone. Union, on the other hand, suffered their third defeat of the season and had to give up the lead in the table to FC Bayern.
Uneventful first half
The story of the first half is quickly told. Both teams lacked any pace and any willingness to take risks. Although Leverkusen had more of the game, they could not score against a compact Berliner. Union posed no danger at all offensively. So it went into the cabins 0-0 without any major highlights.
The second half picked up speed immediately. The first corner of the game gave Leverkusen the lead. Kerem Demirbay brought the ball sharply to the second post, where Andrich beat Rani Khedira and hit the right corner from seven meters (46′).
Bayer now acted much more energetically and purposefully and thus forced the second goal after 56 minutes. Goalkeeper Lennart Grill couldn’t control a back pass after a Berlin corner. Jeremy Frimpong grabbed the ball and passed it on to Diaby, who easily found the empty net.
Diaby puts together the double pack
Union was now off the roll and just two minutes later conceded the next goal. Bakker drove the ball forward on the left and passed it to Diaby at the perfect moment, who tied the brace (58′).
And then Leverkusen started to do magic. In the 68th minute, Nadiem Amiri made a sharp pass in front of the Union goal. Hlozek deflected the ball into the goal with his heel – 4:0. Bayer managed everything, Union nothing more. Eight minutes later, Hlozek was the assist for Bakker, who scored with a powerful left-footed shot to make it 5-0 and the final score.
