Bavo tower in Haarlem turns blue and yellow for Ukraine, tomorrow ‘solidarity action’

The tower of the Grote or Sint Bavo Church on the Grote Markt in Haarlem has been lit tonight in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The municipality has decided this following the Russian invasion of the country. The tower has been lit up since dark and the colors will be on display until midnight.

Not only the colors of the tower are Ukrainian. The Ukrainian national anthem will be played from the tower every hour for the next three months. That is an initiative by city carillonneur Rien Donkersloot.

Solidarity action

And that’s not all. Tomorrow there will be a ‘solidarity action’ organized by the Haarlem city council on the Grote Markt. Council members call on all Haarlem residents to show their support for the Ukrainians. Mayor Jos Wienen, among others, will speak during the meeting.

When asked, the municipalities of Heemstede and Bloemendaal say they will not make a statement for Ukraine for now.
