Battle at the top in the BBL: Alba Berlin stays on FC Bayern’s heels

Alba Berlin is in the basketball Bundesliga with the victory in Braunschweig on the heels of the leaders from Munich.

The German champions came on Tuesday evening (December 6th, 2022) in a catch-up game to a 95:90 (44:43) victory at the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig. The most successful shooters in the Volkswagenhalle were Johannes Thiemann with 15 points for Berlin and David Krämer with 31 points for the hosts.

Kramer strong from a distance, Berlin ripped off

After a narrow 44:43 half-time lead, the champions increased in the third quarter and extended the lead to 14 points with a 10:0 run. Led by national player Krämer, who sank a total of eight threes, Braunschweig stayed within striking distance. But Alba remained ripped off and played off his versatility in attack. In the final phase, Maodo Lo turned up the heat, screwing the lead back into double digits with two quick threes.

With the victory, the Berliners have now drawn level with the second-placed team from Bonn with seven wins from eight games and are still hot on the heels of leaders FC Bayern.

FC Bayern Munich wrestles Oldenburg down

In an early game of the 12th match day, the Munich team beat EWE Baskets Oldenburg 81:77 and thus maintained their lead at the top of the table. Like the pursuers from Bonn and Berlin, FC Bayern have only lost one game of the season, but already have one game and one win more to their credit.

Cassius Winston was the top scorer in Andrea Trinchieri’s team, who controlled the game for long stretches and were still 12 points ahead before the final quarter. But Oldenburg started to catch up against a tired Munich team and came within a point two and a half minutes before the end. In the end, however, the guests lacked the cleverness and calm in the end, Bayern saved the narrow lead to the finish and secured their fifth league win in a row.

The Oldenburgers, where Trey Drechsel (16 points) and Rihards Lomazs (15) who were the best throwers are still in fifth place.
