VDo you want suspense and adrenaline in front of the TV? The first evening of Rai 4 then it’s right for you since, at 9.20pm, the film will be broadcast on first TV Armed bastards. Italian action, with protagonist Marco Bocciwhat a tribute the pulp atmospheres of Quentin Tarantino and the genre cinema that was so fashionable a few decades ago.
Armed bastardsthe plot
Michele (Peppino Mazzotta) lives in a luxurious villa together with his partner Damiana (Maria Fernanda Candido) and his stepdaughter Flower (Amanda Campana). The three live in an elegant and isolated chalet in the mountains and, during one night, Sergio (Marco Bocci), an ex-convict released from prison, unexpectedly breaks into their home and holds them hostage. Imprisoned in Algeria with a conviction for murder, Sergio was in fact pardoned in exchange for a “favor” to be carried out in Italy on behalf of the mysterious businessman Caligula (Fortunato Cerlino).
Sergio immediately gets to work by going to Michele’s villa where he must recover some important documents buried in the family greenhouse. Obviously, the situation will degenerate into violence and bloodshed also because, when everything seems to be working out for the best, the ruthless Caligula joins the quartet in the chalet. With a great desire to take revenge on Michele, once his henchman known by the name of Tony.
A return to the genre cinema of the Seventies
Directed by Gabriele Albanesi, author in the past of excellent horror films such as The forest outside And Ubaldo Terzani Horror Show, Armed bastards right from the title it takes us back to a distant era. Where in Italian cinema bourgeois comedies or existential dramas did not dominate but the so-called b-movies “poliziotteschi” and very violent thrillers who denounced the ugliness and contradictions of society.
Remake (undeclared) of Holidays for a massacre by Fernando Di Leo, the film therefore represents a type of spectacular cinema that is more unique than rare today. 90 minutes of pure adrenaline where action, noir and gangster movies coexist in an explosive way. Thanks to a staging that is never banal, and an editing that leaves no room for breath, the film certainly has no authorial pretensions but rather tries, with a few dramaturgical ingredients, to essentially construct a revenge movie. Where the taste for a certain type of genre narrative also takes priority over the verisimilitude of the plot. And where Albanesi’s direction enjoys playing with the codes of cinema.
First with the use of slow motion and pulp colors, then with an extensive use of flashbacks dedicated to the criminal exploits of Caligula and his companion Tony/Michele. Masterfully played by Peppino Mazzotta, famous for having played Inspector Fazio in Inspector Montalbano. As for the rest of the cast, The protagonist Marco Bocci stands out, simply perfect in the roleand the young Amanda Campana, already seen in the series Summertime. Special mention for Fortunato Cerlino who, in playing a blunt and tough crime boss, gives yet another masterly performance of his long career. Culminating with the role of Don Pietro Savastano in the series Gomorrah.
