The German basketball players won World Cup gold in Manila and celebrated the greatest success in the association’s history.
In the final in the Philippines, the team led by the strong captain Dennis Schröder beat Serbia and former national coach Svetislav Pesic 83:77 (47:47), it was the eighth victory in the eighth tournament game.
30 years after the European Championship triumph in Munich and one year after winning bronze at the home European Championship, the selection of the German Basketball Association (DBB) wrote history, the best World Cup result from the Dirk Nowitzki era was surpassed. With the tournament MVP in its ranks, the DBB team won bronze in Indianapolis/USA in 2002.
It is the second World Cup medal and the fifth overall. In 1993, Germany became European champions under Pesic, in 2005 there was silver at the European Championships and bronze in 2022. National coach Gordon Herbert’s team had already qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris by reaching the semi-finals.
The best thrower at the final in the Mall of Asia Arena in front of 12,022 spectators was Schröder (28 points). Franz Wagner (19) and Johannes Voigtmann (12) also scored in double figures.
