Basketball national coach has to do without stars before World Cup qualification

Basketball national coach Gordon Herbert has to reschedule again before the upcoming phase in the World Cup qualification.

Because Kenneth Ogbe and Karim Jallow are out “for health reasons”, Joshua Obiesie will be nominated by the Fraport Skyliners from Frankfurt, the German Basketball Association (DBB) announced. Dominic Lockhart had previously failed and was replaced by Lukas Meisner and Lukas Wank.

Germany meets Finland on Friday (7:00 p.m.) in Bamberg and next Monday (6:00 p.m.) in Slovenia.

A win from two games would be enough to secure a ticket to the 2023 World Cup in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. Of the bronze medalists at the European Championships, Herbert has only three players available in Niels Giffey, Christian Sengfelder and Justus Hollatz. The team is missing the NBA professionals around Dennis Schröder and Franz Wagner as well as the Euroleague professionals from Alba Berlin and FC Bayern Munich.
