Alba Berlin just can’t get going in the EuroLeague and is still stuck for one win this season.
On the seventh matchday, the team led by basketball world champion Johannes Thiemann lost to the Greek club Panathinaikos Athens in their own hall with 85:99 (47:60). Alba (1:6) is stuck deep in the bottom of the table, Bayern Munich (2:5) is hardly in a better position as the second Bundesliga representative.
Alba allowed the guests in the Mercedes-Benz Arena to pull ahead by 17 points after the break (55:72/26th minute), but caused tension again in the final phase. New signing Matt Thomas scored to make it 78:84 (33′), everything was possible again, but Panathinaikos stopped Berlin’s comeback.
Konstantinos Mitoglou (24 points) and the former Berliner Marius Grigonis (16) were almost unstoppable for the Greeks, Alba had its best throwers in Sterling Brown (17) and Thiemann (16). Next Wednesday (8 p.m./MagentaSport) Berlin will welcome the French team Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne, who also got off to a weak start.
