Bayern Munich basketball players lost their fifth game in the Euro League.

After the 71:82 defeat against Olympiacos Piraeus on Thursday (November 17, 2022), Munich must now make sure not to miss the connection to the playoff places. FC Bayern’s basketball players were outsiders in the Euroleague game against Olympiacos Piraeus started. Because the Greeks are second at the top of the table in the top division, while the Munich team is third from last.

It was easy to see that this distribution of roles should also be reflected in the game. The Munich team didn’t come into play in the first quarter: Five turnovers, a poor shooting rate and few rebounds meant they were clearly behind: FCb went into the second quarter with a lead of 11:27.

FC Bayern’s first race to catch up

There the team of coach Andrea Trinchieri stabilized. With strong actions from Vladimir Lucic and Jaramaz Ognjen as well as the first home game points from Access Niels Giffey Munich started a small run and shortened to 34:40 at halftime.

At the beginning of the third period, a Freddie Gillespie brought FC Bayern to within four points of Olympiacos, but the Greeks immediately shifted up a gear and pulled away again. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the gap was 15 points again.

But Munich fought their way back to the Greeks in front of their home crowd and, nine points behind, were within striking distance again in the middle of the quarter. But then the strangest phase of the game began. Neither team managed to score a single goal for three minutes. Isaac Bonga ended this negative series with two free throws. A Cassius Winston three brought Bayern back up to four points.

But the hosts didn’t come any closer. This time Olympiacos was able to fend off Munich’s race to catch up and lived up to their role as favourites. The Greeks won the game with 82:71. The situation in Europe is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for Andrea Trinchieri’s team. With only two wins from seven games, FC Bayern must be careful not to lose touch with the play-off places.
