What a thriller: FC Bayern Munich’s basketball players won their EuroLeague game against Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz after overtime with 112:109 (56:52, 94:94). In the end it was simply a question of nerves.

On the 24th matchday of the EuroLeague, FC Bayern Basketball achieved its tenth victory. Against Bayern head coach Pablo Laso’s home club, the Munich team needed a good deal of luck and nerves like steel cables to secure the important success. In the end it was Nick-Weiler-Babb who set the course for victory with a three-point throw.

Vitoria saves herself into overtime

After a nervous start on both sides, the Munich team pulled away a little by the first half break (25:19), thanks in particular to Serge Ibaka. For a long time in the second period it looked as if Bayern could extend their lead, but at the end of the quarter the Spaniards came back with two three-pointers (56:52).

Even after the break it remained a close game. It wasn’t until the final quarter that the Munich team were able to gain up to nine points (89:80/94:85). But in crunch time, Bayern lost their nerve. The Spaniards made good point after point. The Munich team, who were previously so strong offensively, were no longer able to score anything. Three seconds before the end, Codi Miller-McIntyre scored for Vitoria to make it 94:94 – that meant extra time.

Weiler-Babb takes care of that Preliminary decision

In overtime it went back and forth. Only Weiler-Babb made the preliminary decision with his three-pointer to make it 110:107. The Spaniards hit two more free throws, but in the end Bayern retained the upper hand 112:109 thanks to two more free throws from Carsen Edwards.

With 21 points, Ibaka was Bayern’s best thrower. At Vitoria, Markus Howard scored 27 points. The guests were missing him in the crucial seconds because of his fifth foul.

With ten wins, the Munich team retained the theoretical chance of reaching the play-offs of the best eight teams. But another home win is needed on Thursday when the top Greek club Olympiakos Piraeus visits Munich.
