For a long time, the Bayern basketball team held up well against Spain’s top club FC Barcelona, but in the last minute they had to admit defeat in the Euroleague. It’s another bitter defeat in the race for a playoff spot.
In the footballers’ Champions League, that was a clear affair this season when FC Bayern met FC Barcelona: two Munich wins in two games. Things looked different for women in the same league, the two teams shared the wins.
And in basketball? The Catalans dominate there. FC Barcelona is an absolute top club – and Bayern are one of the smaller clubs in the Euroleague. That’s why they lost their second duel with Barcelona this season on Thursday evening: After the 73:84 in Munich in October, they lost 70:72 (33:34) in a game marked by difficulties in the end.
Unfortunate defeat in the race for playoff spot
The final minute proved to be decisive, with both teams still tied 70:70. While Barcelona scored, Ognjen Jaramaz missed the final hat-trick just before the final whistle.
For Munich, this was the second defeat in their “Spanish week”. After the bitter away game in Valencia on Tuesday the performance in Catalonia also ended unhappily two days later. Bayern have a record of 9:14 after 23 games and are in 14th place. In the race for a playoff spot, the defeats were two other sensitive dampers. Barcelona are third with a record of 15:8.
