Basketball | EuroLeague: Alba without a chance at Real

The basketball players from Bayern Munich are finding new hope in the EuroLeague. In the dramatic basement duel at the French representative ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne, coach Pablo Laso’s team prevailed 101:100 (74:74, 37:40) after double overtime and celebrated their fourth victory in the tenth game.

The seventh-placed team in the Bundesliga table thus regained contact with the play-off places. Alba Berlin had no chance at Real Madrid 75:99 (33:44) and remains at the bottom with just one win.

Again with the recovered world champions Isaac Bonga (groin) and Andreas Obst (foot), the Munich team opened up a seven-point lead in the second quarter, but gave it away by halftime. In the second half, Bayern were temporarily behind by ten points, but fought back in the final phase. Six seconds before the end, Leandro Bolmaro missed the victory from the free throw line in regular time.

In the first overtime, Munich were ahead for a long time, and in the second overtime, world champion Niels Giffey decided the game with a free throw 2.1 seconds before the end. Bolmaro and Devin Booker were FC Bayern’s best scorers with 16 points each. Obst injured his foot again shortly before the end.

Alba was already ten points behind after the opening quarter and was never able to reduce this deficit. World champion Johannes Thiemann scored twelve points, only Gabriele Procida (14) was more successful.
