Basketball EM: After Fiba decision: Turkey wants to move before CAS

Status: 06.09.2022 18:58

The Turkish basketball association TFB wants to go to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport CAS because of the decision after a protest at the European Championship game against Georgia.

The TFB condemns the decision of the FIBA association, the Turkish association announced on its website. The protest of the Turkish team against the rating of the European Championship game against the hosts had previously been rejected by FIBA.

However, the team initially did not make good on its threat of withdrawing from the European Championship and achieved a sporting victory. Against outsiders Belgium there was a 78:63 (37:30) in Tbilisi and thus the third success of the current tournament. After the disagreements in the game against hosts Georgia on Sunday evening, the association had threatened to leave the European Championship early.

Despite the interruption, the clock continued to run for 22 seconds

In Sunday night’s game, the clock went down 22 seconds from 4:48 to 4:26 in the fourth quarter, although the game was interrupted after a tussle between Furkan Korkmaz and Duda Sanadze. Turkey lost after two overtimes with 83:88 (75:75, 68:68, 33:36).

In basketball, the clock is usually stopped when the game is paused. FIBA Europe justified the decision by saying that Turkey could not prove that without the timing glitch there would have been a different result. The Turkish association does not accept the reasoning.
