Lions off to a better start
The Lions started the game much better and were already leading by 17 points (26:9) after the first quarter. In the second period, Freiburg improved, defended more aggressively and played faster forward. But the hosts remained the clearly accurate team and took a 15-point lead (45:30) into the half-time break.
In the second half, Freiburg continued to fight, the hit rate for the Lions dropped. By the final quarter, the Lions lead had dropped to ten points (52:42). In the last section, Freiburg temporarily reduced the gap to seven points, but the hosts fought back and were able to pull away again.
Sensational record as a climber
As promoted, the Rheinland Lions had finished the preliminary round at the top of the table and only suffered three defeats in 24 games. The Lions also won the two encounters with final opponent Freiburg. They went undefeated in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
