December 20 – 10.40pm – MILAN

The “classic” returns to the scene with special effects at the opening of the 12th matchday of Serie A: Olimpia Milano beats Cantù 94-89 at the PalaDesio. The best of EA7 is undoubtedly the unstoppable Nebo, who signs his career-high with 22 points, accompanied by 11 rebounds. Seasonal high also for the former Bortolani of the evening (21 points), fundamental as well as the new addition Erick Green, which however were not enough for Acqua San Bernardo, condemned by a wasted possession by Sneed in the last seconds of the match. While waiting for tomorrow’s matches, EA7 momentarily holds Venezia in third place, consolidating its position in the standings in view of the Final Eight of the Italian Cup.

the match

Ready to go, and already after 100” it is already 7-0 in favor of Milan, who find the key to their excellent start in Ellis and LeDay. After almost 3′ without a basket, Cantù broke the deadlock late with the pair of former players Bortolani-Moraschini, but the defensive holes under the basket (6/8 conceded near the rim in the first 10′) kept the hosts in check, who trailed 22-29 at the end of the first quarter. Despite the 5 points in a row from the newcomer Green from Cantù, at the start of the second period Milan still appears to be in control thanks to an always punctual circulation of the ball, which especially rewards Ricci and Brooks: +12 for EA7 (27-39) in the 13th minute. But just when Olimpia reaches its maximum advantage, Sneed and Bortolani lead a 9-0 run that brings the Brienza team back into contact (36-39). Brooks and Nebo give coach Poeta some breathing room, but he is forced to limit LeDay’s playing time, already with the 4th foul 2′ from the end of the first half: EA7 still ends the first half of the match ahead 54-47.

Upon returning from the locker room, only Bortolani was there: 9 points scored in 5′, in addition to the assist for Gilyard’s triple which brought Acqua San Bernardo back to -3 (62-65). And on the siren of the third quarter, the overtaking finally arrives: Green goes on his own and raises the +1 Cantù floater (70-69). But after the break Milan immediately brought the inertia back to their side, with a run of 8-0 (70-77) driven by the centimeters of an unstoppable Nebo for the long canturini. But 3′ from the end it’s Bortolani again from the arc who makes the charge, while Basile supports the basket for -3 (85-88). 1′ from the siren Ellis foully stops Gilyard’s penetration, who makes 2/2 from the line and brings Cantù back to -1 (89-90). Sneed has the overtaking ball in his hands, but it collapses disastrously on Shields’ defense: it is the tombstone for the home team, Guduric closes it with the clock stopped and cancels Acqua San Bernardo’s hopes of achieving the home victory, which they have not had against Olimpia since 2015.

Cantù: Bortolani 21, Green and Moraschini 12
