Table leaders Rheinland Lions from the women’s basketball Bundesliga (DBBL) are ending play with immediate effect.
The DBBL and the sponsoring company of the Lions agreed on this step “after the opening of the insolvency proceedings”, as both parties announced on Saturday evening (07.01.2023).
Financial difficulties
This means that all Lions games played so far in the current Bundesliga main round will be cancelled, the team will be removed from the table and will be relegated. VfL Bochum as opponents in the quarter-finals of the cup will receive a bye.
The financial difficulties of the Rheinland Lions had been public knowledge for some time. A number of players had already left the team.
