Basketball Bundesliga: Brose Bamberg on the abyss

As of: 12/28/2022 8:27 a.m

The Brose Bamberg once dominated the basketball Bundesliga. But after the 86:92 defeat against Bayreuth, coach Oren Amiel’s team is in the middle of a relegation battle. What are the reasons for the sporting failure?

It’s really not an easy time for the supporters of Brose Bamberg. They have been able to celebrate so many successes with their team in recent years: since 2005, the Upper Franconians have won nine championship titles and six cups. They celebrated their last triumph in 2019.

Third Bundesliga defeat in a row

Since then things have been going downhill for the people of Bamberg. In the last few seasons, it was still just enough for the playoffs, but even this goal seems to be a long way off at the moment. Three Bundesliga defeats in a row and only three wins from eleven games have been recorded this season. After the 86:92 defeat (49:43) in Bayreuth, Brose Bamberg has finally arrived in the relegation battle. Only one win separates the table-14. still from bottom of the table Braunschweig.

Various reasons for the crisis

The fans are looking for the reason why things are going so badly at the moment: “You can always forget a quarter. Maybe they are nervous, they make too many beginner mistakes. Maybe they lack the necessary self-confidence?”

Another thesis: Is the crash due to bad player scouting? Those responsible used to get surprise transfers more often – strokes of luck like Kyle Hines or Brad Wanamaker many years ago, who came to Bamberg as unknown players and now play at the highest level in Europe or in the US NBA league.

Lower sponsor income

The automotive supplier Brose has significantly reduced its sponsorship commitment. That makes it more difficult for the club management to lure top players to Bamberg.

The fans who traveled to the neighboring city loudly demanded “defense” in Bayreuth. Once again, Bamberg’s defense was anything but outstanding. It was once elementary for “Freak City Bamberg”. Somehow she got lost.

Missing identification figures

The team that brought the first championship title to Bamberg in 2005 only made it through team spirit and unbelievable commitment – and because the fans pushed the players forward. Today, however, the Bamberg hall is almost never sold out. The spark doesn’t seem to jump from the team to the fans or from the fans to the team.

There is a lack of real identification figures in the team and in management such as Steffen Hamann, Karsten Tadda or managing director Wolfgang Heyder. As long as the success was there, it wasn’t so bad. But now there is neither sporting success nor excessive identification. That could be damn dangerous for the traditional basketball location Bamberg.
