A doping case threatens the Niners Chemnitz. Jason George has been provisionally suspended after a conspicuous test result. NADA’s investigation procedure will provide further information.
Bad news for the Niners Chemnitz basketball players: As the Bundesliga club announced on Monday (May 1st, 2023), the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) had initiated an investigation into Jason George for a possible violation of anti-doping regulations.
This was preceded by a conspicuous test result during the game and training controls. George was then suspended from the German Basketball Association (DBB) and from playing in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). Already at the furious Victory against the Towers Hamburg Last weekend, which kept the Niners in contention for the playoff spots, George was no longer in the Saxons’ squad.
NADA investigation can take weeks
The presumption of innocence applies to the 21-year-old until further notice. It is completely unclear when a result from NADA can be expected. The investigation can take a few weeks, said Matthias Pattloch, spokesman for the Niners, when asked by MDR. Until then, the club’s hands are tied. Nothing can be said about the test result in detail either. George is in communication with his agent and legal counsel.
The Chemnitz basketball players are affected by such a case for the first time. The shock at the news was correspondingly great, explained Pattloch. A statement from the club said: “The Niners Chemnitz are clearly against any kind of doping and will examine their steps in relation to the player Jason George depending on the further course of the NADA process.”
Jason George is currently on loan from Bayern Munich to Niners Chemnitz.
Tough sporting loss for the Niners
George’s suspension is also a serious blow in sporting terms. The Niners only loaned him out from Bayern Munich in December. Since then, the former youth international, who has primarily played in the forward positions and as a shooting guard, has played 30 competitive games and scored an average of 4.6 points. His contract in Chemnitz runs until the end of the 2023/24 season.
