Basketball: BBL bottom Bayreuth ended losing streak

Bottom medi Bayreuth has ended its series of defeats in the relegation battle of the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) and thus sent an urgently needed sign of life.

Coach Mladen Drijencic’s team won on Friday evening against EWE Baskets Oldenburg, who were in such good form recently, 85:75 (42:44), an outstanding final quarter (30:13) and top scorer Brandon Childress (26 points) brought victory.

Bayreuth had previously lost eleven games in a row. Under Drijencic, who took over the team at the beginning of February, it was the first victory for Bayreuth – of all things against the former club of their new boss. Drijencic won the BBL Cup as head coach of the Baskets in 2015.

However, Bayreuth still needs a few more successes to catch up. The fourth win faces 20 defeats, the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig on the first non-relegation zone have a 7:17 record. Oldenburg, who recently celebrated four league wins in a row, is comfortably fourth in the play-off ranks.
