Bas Kuipers breaks after Go Ahead duel: ‘Father has had two brain haemorrhages, I played for him’ Sport

While the entire Adelaarshorst celebrated a point won for Go Ahead Eagles against SC Heerenveen, left back Bas Kuipers had tears in the eyes. The captain says he has had a tough, emotional week in which his father suffered two brain haemorrhages. “He loved coming to watch and loved the Eagles.”

,,I’m happy,” Kuipers started his interview with ESPN. His team had won a draw against Heerenveen via Finn Stokkers in the 93rd minute and afterwards the captain released a lot of emotions. “It has been a tough week. My father had two brain hemorrhages last Wednesday, the last of which was fatal to him. His body is still there, but the brain is no longer working and the doctors can’t do anything for him.”

Still, Kuipers thought it was important to play tonight in the Adelaarshorst. “I get a lot of strength from this. My father was also a very big fan. He loved to watch and loved the Eagles. That’s why I decided to play football.” Or was that a difficult decision? “I can’t hold his hand all the time and I think he knows it’s right. I think he just wanted me to be here today.”
