BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Dietmar Bartsch, leader of the Left Party, sees a CSU initiative to eliminate VAT on staple foods as fundamentally positive. “I would wish that this would then also reach practice and people would be relieved,” he said on Thursday on RTL / ntv “early start”. He would be happy if there was an initiative after the summer break “and that could really become a reality”.
At a meeting on Wednesday, almost three months before the state elections in Bavaria, the CSU called for the complete abolition of VAT on staple foods – “not just for vegetables, not just for organic, but also for meat, for fish, for milk,” said party leader Markus Söder.
With a view to the inner-party dispute in the left, Bartsch said: One certainly made the big mistake of presenting oneself at least in appearance as a divided bunch. “That’s a huge mistake, such parties are not elected.”/thn/DP/jha
