On his eighth album, the man from LA plays music that sometimes makes his home studio sound like Ocean Way and seems to fall from that era, but also likes to comment on it, in a voluptuously ironic swan song to the “billionaires” of this world, for example, or along with it a shoulder-shrugging “This modern love isn’t modern art”, which doesn’t take away the romantic impetus from “It’s You”.

As subtle as it is demanding

Stylistically, there is a lot on offer, from bossa flair (“Easy Listeners”) to orientalisms (“Strange Animal”) and jingle-jangle pop (“All Dressed In Rain”) to the baroque folk of “Alice Arrives” and its string arrangement is as subtle as it is demanding. Everything held together by a voice that lets itself fall softly into the songs, but also has a pinch of drama up its sleeve.
