Barely any support for Moorsleed mayor Vergote in…

The first question the city council received was whether the city council believed that the mayor should resign based on his conviction. We understand that a (large) majority answered ‘yes’ to that question. So also people from his own coalition.

The second question contained a motion addressed to Flemish Minister of the Interior Gwendolyn Rutten to investigate the matter and take appropriate measures. That motion also passed with a large majority.

Support for Mayor Vergote is therefore not unanimous, even within his Vision party. But the city council cannot force Vergote to resign. Earlier this evening, the mayor announced in front of the Focus-WTV camera that he is no longer a candidate for mayor in the upcoming municipal elections.
