This Monday, Barcelona City Council, the Generalitat de Catalunya and Fira de Barcelona formed the commission that will be in charge of scheduling the events commemorating the centenary of the International exhibition that the city held in 1929with the desire to ensure that by remembering that event the same thing as then was achieved: a boost for the future of the Catalan capital.
It is something that has always been attributed to the exhibition that took place 94 years ago, and that left as its main fruits the arrangement and organization of the Montjuïc mountain, including its funicular, and the Plaza de Espanya. He also bequeathed to the people of Barcelona a debt of 180 million pesetas at that time (one million euros at the time), despite which the balance he had is considered very positive.

Collboni recalled at the presentation of the new commission that his great-grandfather worked at the exhibition and that his great-uncle was in charge of the magical fountain of Montjuïc. Regarding how the city will remember that event, the mayor explained that a significant end to the festival is planned: “The idea is that it will be a commemoration scaled in time and highly participated by the entire city. We imagine the culmination in 2029 with an international event that has to project the legacy we received in the future of the city.” He has not provided further details about the proposal.

Constanti Serrallongageneral director of Fira de Barcelona, explained that the protocol signed by the representatives of the different administrations foresees two lines, the celebration of the centenary of the exhibition and the reform that through construction and remodeling will give rise to four new spaces, two new palaces and the reform of two others.
It is estimated that in 2025 work will begin on what will be a remodeling in principle parallel to the renovation that the city council will undertake in the area to build nearly 500 homes and equipment in the area around Lleida Street, for which Fira will release square meters thanks to the transfer of activities through its expansion in L’Hospitalet.
