On October 20, 2020, a week before resigning, Joseph Maria Bartomeu renewed to Ter Stegen, Lenglet, Pique and De Jong. An extension of contracts that sought to reduce the salary weight in the midst of a pandemic. The club saved about 18 million in wages, 30 in total counting the amortizations of Lenglet and De Jong. But it was not a simple deferral since the savings for the Bartomeu exercise meant an extra cost of an additional 311 million for the club.
Lenglet, with a contract until 2023, and Ter Stegen (2022) renewed for three years and De Jong (2024) and Piqué (2022) extended two courses. The four renewals were made hours before the negotiating table was set up with the rest of the workforce, which was to discuss the formulas to lower the wage cost in the midst of a pandemic and which agreed to defer 122 million in salaries and 50 in variables, with which the total savings was 172. Piqué’s renewal had been in that line, receiving the same salary he had in more years, but in the case of Lenglet, Ter Stegen and De Jong they lowered a little that first season but then they came to almost double their emoluments.

The current board has already transferred these four players who see signs of criminality in these contracts. He has proposed going back to previous salaries, pointing out that otherwise he will take him to court. Piqué, the only one who did not benefit from the renewal, is for the moment the only one who has been willing to do so. The central negotiates, in addition, to lower his salary very significantly.
While Lenglet is on loan at Tottenham, in De Jong’s case this fact intersects with the club’s attempts to transfer him, which would be a formula to solve the mess. Despite the fact that the club reached an agreement with Manchester United to transfer him for 75 million plus 10 in variables, Frenkie still has no interest in this option. Chelsea is an option that he would see with better eyes, by playing in the Champions League and being able to live in London, but for now he still wants to continue in Barcelona.
