In the past few weeks, Alphonso Davies has shuttled between the starting eleven and the bench at FC Bayern. An unusual situation for the nimble Canadian, who is making headlines off the pitch with his contract poker. However, coach Thomas Tuchel does not see a correlation between performance and background noise.
“He is one of our players, an absolute regular and knows how much we value him,” emphasized the trainer at the matchday press conference for the home game against 1. FC Union Berlin.
Davies’ current working paper with the German record champions is valid until 2025, but talks about an extension have stalled. At the same time, Real Madrid’s advances are becoming more and more concrete.
“For me, the contract situation doesn’t change anything. I have full trust in Christoph Freund and Jan-Christian Dreesen,” said Tuchel, classifying the status quo for the winger.
So far this season, Davies has appeared on the pitch in 19 matches for FC Bayern. The 23-year-old prepared three goals, but he didn’t score himself yet.

Overall, Tuchel is satisfied with his protégé’s performance. However, he doesn’t see Davies at his limit yet.
“He plays at the highest level and has the potential to develop further. He can still improve in his tactical understanding against the ball and consistency, there is still a lot of room for him,” noted the Bayern coach.
At the same time, Tuchel asked Davies to be patient. “You always forget how young he is,” explained the 50-year-old, who has been in charge on Säbener Strasse since March.
Davies moved from Vancouver to Munich in January 2019 for 14 million euros. There, the national player enjoyed a rapid rise, which culminated in the Champions League triumph in 2020. There have also been five German championships and two DFB Cup victories.
