Air war museum Fort Veldhuis in Heemskerk has opened the new museum season with a few major battles. Re-enactors re-enact a confrontation between the Allies and the Germans in front of the audience. “Spectacular to see, but it is also in memory of the boys who all died in the Second World War,” says founder Johan Graas.
Normally, the museum is already open for schools and other large groups before this time. Graas: “That was not possible now because the fort has all new doors and frames. The renovation has just been completed. It shines like new again, the outside looks a lot better than it was.”

With the Aircraft Recovery Group Foundation, Graas traces aircraft and then recovers them. Also inform next of kin. In the air war museum you can see many parts of the aircraft and the stories behind them.
Bloody serious
The ten-minute battle is fierce, but the men do not fall out of their roles either. “It is often said: it is a bit like playing soldier, but it is not. It is deadly serious.”
A volunteer from the museum also enjoyed it: “It was really wonderful to see all those re-enactors together. We also played great this weekend, I am very happy with that.”
