After Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool FC, Xavi Hernández will also vacate his coaching position at the struggling FC Barcelona at the end of the current season.
The 44-year-old Spaniard announced this on Saturday after the Catalans’ bitter 3-5 defeat against Villarreal FC.
“I want to announce that I will not continue as Barca coach beyond June 30,” Xavi said at the press conference. “I believe the situation needs a change. The moment has come to communicate this publicly. The decision has been made for a few days.”
There was also an official club statement on the departure of the club icon late on Saturday evening. Xavi’s contract with the Spanish champions would have run until 2025.
The former world-class playmaker said he discussed the decision to leave office early with President Joan Laporta, sports director Deco and his staff. He thinks “of the club, also of the well-being of the players. It will free them, it will make them more relaxed,” explained Xavi.
“I will give everything in the remaining four months. I believe that we can still have a very good season and this announcement is helpful to improve the situation,” said the outgoing head coach.
