Borussia Dortmund and Mahmoud Dahoud will go their separate ways next summer. BVB sports director Sebastian Kehl confirmed this on Monday with a view to the national player’s expiring contract.
“I had a very open and honest conversation with Mo last week. I told him that we will not be renewing his contract in the summer. Mo has been with us for six years now, he is a very good footballer and I have sporting and humanely a very high opinion of him. Nevertheless, we decided to take this step,” Kehl told “Bild”.
Dahoud was absent from BVB for several months in the first half of the season due to a shoulder injury. “During this time, other players took their chance,” said Kehl, who took over as manager in Dortmund from veteran Michael Zorc before the current season.
BVB’s expectations are rarely met
BVB transferred twelve million euros to Borussia Mönchengladbach for Dahoud in the summer of 2017. The 2017 U21 European champion in the black and yellow jersey rarely lived up to expectations.
Only in Edin Terzic’s first term of office from December 2020 did Dahoud blossom into a top performer. He mainly held this role under Marco Rose in the 2021/2022 season.
After Rose’s dismissal last summer and Terzic’s re-employment as head coach, the now 27-year-old was actually planned to continue as a permanent fixture.
However, this was followed by the protracted injury and now BVB’s decision not to continue working together.
Hardly any time left for Mahmoud Dahoud at BVB
Most recently, Dahoud had hardly had any playing time under Terzic. Only 14 minutes in competitive games in the 2023 calendar year are in his statistics.
It is unclear where the two-time international will go. Several clubs from the English Premier League should deal with Dahoud, it was said recently.
