There is apparently a bang around ex-national player Mesut Özil. According to a media report from Turkey, the 2014 world champion is ending his career.
As “Fanatik” journalist Yakup Cinar reports, Mesut Özil’s contract with Basaksehir will be terminated. As a result, the 34-year-old decided to end his career in professional football.
The attacking midfielder had been out for several months due to back problems. Özil celebrated his comeback in mid-January. However, it has not yet been enough for a mission over the full 90 minutes.
Most recently, the playmaker was in the league game against Kayserispor (0:1). Özil was replaced prematurely by coach Emre Belözoglu during the break.
As Cinar reports, the native of Gelsenkirchen did not take part in Basaksehir’s training on Friday morning and informed his teammates that he wanted to end his career.
Accordingly, the contract in Istanbul, which is valid until the summer, is to be terminated prematurely.
Ups and downs with the national team
During his career, Özil played a total of 92 international matches for the German national team. The ten-man celebrated his greatest triumph in 2014 when he became world champion with the DFB team in Brazil.
After the preliminary round at the 2018 World Cup and a public discussion about a photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Özil resigned from the national team in a dispute.
Via FC Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen to Real Madrid
During his club career, the 34-year-old played for FC Schalke 04, Werder Bremen, Real Madrid, Arsenal FC, Fenerbahce and Basaksehir.
Now Özil’s time in professional football is apparently coming to an end. An official confirmation from the player or the club is still pending.
