British jazz band Sons Of Kemet have released four albums since they formed in 2011. Their current album BLACK TO THE FUTURE was released in May 2021. ME author Frank Sawatzki awarded a whopping 5.5 out of six possible stars and summarized his impression in his review as follows: “Shabaka Hutching’s band transforms the current protests and lawsuits of the Afro-American community into impressive jazz that goes far beyond jazz.” How gratifying it was when Sons Of Kemet announced a tour of Germany in September 2021, presented by Musikexpress. And how unfortunate it is that this tour had to be canceled in January.
Now it gets even worse: the band announced their upcoming separation on Instagram on Thursday. The concerts that are still planned will still be played, but they are the last chance to experience the Sons of Kemet live. After that, they want to close the chapter of their band life for the foreseeable future.

In Germany Sons Of Kemet should be seen twice this year – and then twice in the same city: On August 7th there is a concert in Hamburg’s “Kampnagel”
on the planon August 17th one in the local Elbphilharmonie.
Sons of Kemet: Drummer Tom Skinner continues with The Smile
Recently, a Sons of Kemet member made headlines with another band: drummer Tom Skinner is part of the supergroup The Smile, which also consists of Radiohead singer Thom Yorke and Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood. Their debut album A LIGHT FOR ATTRACTING ATTENTION was released on May 13, 2022 via XL Recordings – initially only digitally. Vinyl and CD versions will follow on June 17th. The 13-song record was produced by Radiohead’s producer Nigel Godrich and mastered by Bob Ludwig. The recordings were accompanied by strings from the London Contemporary Orchestra and a full horn section featuring contemporary British jazz musicians including Byron Wallen, Theon and Nathaniel Cross, Chelsea Carmichael, Robert Stillman and Jason Yarde.
