Ban on the sale of live animals on the market, horse market in Torhout may remain

The horse market in Torhout only takes place once a year. As a result, it receives an exception to the new measure in the Animal Welfare Codex. At the end of last year, the city of Bruges already banned the sale of live animals on the Market.

Animal shelter cooperation

There are other measures in the codex. For example, there will be a ban on the home slaughter of sheep, goats and pigs. Chicken breeders must give their animals even more space. They need to completely transition from chicken cages to a free range aviary system.

Slaughterhouses must install cameras, and every municipality must enter into a partnership with an animal shelter. Finally, each police zone must also appoint a person who is the point of contact when it comes to animal welfare.
