Bamba Dieng: Agreed with Leeds, turnaround at airport, flunked out in Nice

Also last chance from the table

This article first appeared on September 1st and was subsequently updated.

Bamba Dieng (22) is poised to make for one of Deadline Day’s stories: the Olympique Marseille centre-forward kept loud on Thursday night “The Athletic‘ at a private jet terminal and decides whether to transfer to Leeds United or OGC Nice.

Update September 1, 7:50 p.m.: Dieng is said to have opted for Nice and completed the medical check at the Ligue 1 club.

Update September 2, 8:08 am: Noisy Fabrizio Romano Dieng did not successfully pass the medical check at OGC Nice, a transfer – no matter where – burst. After probably the craziest story on Deadline Day, the 22-year-old is still a player at Olympique Marseille. But: It is possible that the last word has not yet been spoken in the matter. On Friday morning there should be further medical examinations, reports “The Athletic”. French regulations allow Ligue 1 clubs to sign one (!) additional player outside of the transfer window using an exception (“joker”).

Update September 2, 9:59 p.m.: announced on Friday evening Transfer expert Fabrizio Romanothat the last chance for a change is now off the table. Nice and Marseille have not come to an agreement after talks in the last few hours.

According to reports, Dieng has already agreed with Leeds, who want to pay a fee of around 10 million euros for his services. The plane was ready before he received an offer from Nice, which he obviously liked – the English were not very happy about this development. Now it was time to make a quick decision, because the transfer windows in France and England were supposed to close at 11 p.m. and midnight respectively.

The Senegalese national striker is under contract in Marseille until 2024 and celebrated his breakthrough last season with ten goals in 25 mostly short appearances. The runner-up took Dieng from Diambars FC in Senegal for EUR 400,000 in the summer of 2020 – he has been able to increase his market value from EUR 700,000 to EUR 10 million in the past twelve months.
