“It is an important step towards energy independence,” said Lithuanian Energy Minister Dainius Kreivys. “By no longer importing Russian energy, we will stop financing the aggressor”.
The Baltic States have been trying for years to become less dependent on Russian energy. They have increased their own power production and also strengthened the high voltage network with Scandinavia. Last year, Latvia and Lithuania only imported 300 MWh of electricity from Russia, compared to 1,300 MWh before.
