Balta Rugs closes site in Avelgem, 256 jobs at risk

The economy is struggling, Balta Rugs says, and costs for the yarn department are rising. Rising energy prices are also not doing the textile group any good, it seems. That is why Balta Rugs wants to move part of the activities in Avelgem to its other locations in Sint-Baafs-Vijve and Sint-Eloois-Vijve, and its department in Turkey.

500 people work in Avelgem, half of which can move to the other locations in our region. 256 people are therefore threatened with redundancy.

European distribution center

At the same time, Balta Rugs wants to invest 14 million euros to expand the logistics capacity in Sint-Baafs-Vijve: the group wants to make this site the central distribution center for Europe. “With these interventions we can improve the effectiveness of our division and give the future of our activities in Belgium every opportunity,” says CEO Marc Dessein of Balta Rugs.

Balta Rugs employs 2,500 people worldwide, except for us and in Turkey they are also active in the US.
