AZ earned more against PSV. But, as is often the case this season, the Alkmaar club did not take advantage of the opportunities. This time PSV player Xavi Simons sent AZ into mourning, 1-2. As a result, Pascal Jansen’s team closes the season with a defeat and also no third place. “At the end of the day, you get what you deserve.”
Due to the defeat at home against PSV on Sunday afternoon, AZ ends the season as number four. This means that AZ will participate in the Conference League again next season and not the more highly regarded Europa League. “It hurts, because it was possible today.” Are the words of the disappointed trainer Pascal Jansen afterwards.
Huge head chance
Pantelis Hatzidiakos also did not disguise his disappointment in front of the camera. The central defender of AZ had a huge header just before time. At that moment it was still 1-1 and he was able to head AZ to the win and thus third place. After his miss, the Greek hit the ground several times out of frustration. “That was a very sour moment.”

Draw up balance
The season is over. And the balance can be drawn up. “The team has grown compared to last year.” Is a point that Jansen is proud of. Nevertheless, the Alkmaar coach will also be disappointed by a number of moments when AZ has let it down. For example, the Alkmaarders earned more in the quarterfinals against FC Utrecht of the KNVB Cup and that also applied to the semifinals of the Conference League against West Ham United. AZ often receives compliments, only this season it lacks something tangible. “That hurts, we have to make better use of our opportunities.”

The AZ selection will only meet for lunch tomorrow afternoon and that’s the holiday. At the end of June, the Jansen players will gather again for the first training and a new season.
