Bald grassland opposite Roodbaardtuin Assen becomes colorful flower meadow

The front garden of the monumental building De Eerste Steen on the Beilerstraat in Assen is being renovated. The owner of the building wants to turn it into a native flower meadow, in the spirit of the Redbeard Garden opposite.

Now the garden is still a meadow with only grass and weeds. Nice for the sheep, which graze there parts of the year, but it doesn’t look very inspiring. The contrast with the recently renovated Redbeard Garden is great. Landscape Management Drenthe started working there last year and turned the overgrown wilderness into a small park.

The end result of the Roodbaardtuin has not gone unnoticed by Anton Veenstra, owner of De Eerste Steen for over a year. His own front garden could form a connection between his monument – located right next to the Asserbos – and the new park.

“People now often take photos of De Eerste Steen, because it is such a characteristic building. But now there is a tuber field in front of it. While it can really become an eye-catching part of Assen,” says Veenstra.

winding paths

For this, the property owner has hired a landscape architect who has also worked in the Roodbaardtuin. Veenstra would like to see elements of the park reflected in the flower meadow in the future.

Characteristic of the style of the original architect, Lucas Pieters Roodbaard (1782-1851) are the winding paths that find their way through the garden. Veenstra would like to adopt a similar pattern for the project in the front garden of De Eerste Steen. It is not the intention that people walk through the garden. “But taking pictures is always allowed,” says Veenstra.
