He has survived every heavy baking test in ‘Bake Off Vlaanderen’ for several weeks now, but Erik Monstrey (59) from Stabroek has also put up a hell of a fight in real life. When he contracted hairy cell leukemia, an extremely rare cancer, he was even doomed. “I sniffled like a toddler then,” he says in a conversation with ‘Dag Alles’ about his participation in ‘Bake Off’, his illness and its impact on his family. “My wife caught my youngest son trying to empty the medicine cabinet.”
