Baerbock for cooperation with the Czech Republic in fighting forest fires

PRAGUE (dpa-AFX) – According to Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, Germany and the Czech Republic must move even closer together in crises. With a view to the devastating forest fire in the Czech National Park Bohemian Forest, the Green politician said on Tuesday during a visit to Prague: “Just as CO2 does not stop at the border, forest fires do not stop at the border either.” That’s why we have to stand up for climate protection and, in such emergency situations, for civil protection.

Baerbock recalled that there had been debates in Germany in recent years about the possible procurement of a squadron of firefighting aircraft. The current forest fire in the Czech Republic underlines the importance of this discussion for Central Europe.

More than 400 firefighters are now fighting the flames in the national park on the border with Saxon Switzerland. The fire has spread to an area of around 30 hectares. The region is known for its unique rocky landscape./hei/mfi/DP/men
